History
The town of Litchfield was originally founded in 1721, but was not added to the county until 30 years later, in 1751. It led the county in all industries including commercial, agricultural and industrial sectors. During the Revolutionary War, the town and its nearby county helped the Continental soldiers seek refuge from ongoing British assaults. From 1784 to 1834, the town experienced “golden age.” Today it’s a modernized town that represents the beauty and candor of this expansive county.
Attractions
A number of attractions are hosted here in the county and in the nearby town of Litchfield. A few of them include: New England Carousel Museum, Weir Farm National Historic Site, John J. McCarthy Observatory, Warner Theater, Palace Theater and Gallery on the Green. Seasonal events are also held in this town and throughout the rest of the county.
Bantam Lake
Bantam lake is a large, 900-acre natural lake with freshwater. It differs from larger lakes like Candlewood Lake in the sense that it is not manmade (Candlewood Lake is made from damming two nearby rivers). The real estate here has become increasingly popular in recent years as recreationists seek a more secluded place to call home that is not as busy as other lakeside communities.
Private Clubs
A few exclusive private clubs offer membership to residents who own Bantam Lake real estate. The most popular club is the Bantam Lake Yacht Club, a club that has a 100 year tenure and provides outings, events and even training classes for families. Another club is the Bantam Lake Ski Club of Litchfield and Morris, a private water skiing club that was created in 1958.
